Respecting workers: the Australian way
February 4, 2009
Have you ever been to one of those hawkers’ markets where the salesperson just can’t take no for an answer, and continues chasing you down the street long after you’ve said you’re not interested?
That’s how much of the Telstra workforce is feeling right now.
They’ve told human resources several times that they don’t want a bar of their dodgy, non-union agreements.
They’ve voted no to them, and they’ve taken industrial action in support of a fair, union-negotiated enterprise agreement.
But still management comes back at them with the same offer, made to smaller and smaller groups of people.
Now there appears to have been a change of strategy. Telstra has made a general offer to the rest of the workforce, claiming this will be the last chance to vote for six months.
Well, this doesn’t change anything. The answer should again be no, accompanied by another message: enough is enough. Stop the pressure and respect the workers’ decision that they don’t want a non-union deal.
Sit down with the unions and negotiate a genuine agreement that will comply with Australia’s new workplace laws.
That’s the Australian way.
